Maharaja Suhel Dev University, Azamgarh was established by the Uttar Pradesh Government vide its Gazette Notification No. 1446/79-V-1-19-1(K)-3-19, Lucknow, dated 5 August 2019. Vide the State Government Notification No. 610/Sattar-1-2021-16(74)/2018 T.C., Lucknow, Dated 28 April 2021, the first academic session of the University was commenced from 2021-2022. It is the State Government University with its under construction own residential campus at Azamgarh and affiliated colleges spread over the two districts of Azamgarh and Mau in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh. Until the start of this University, the affiliated colleges of the aforesaid two districts were affiliated to Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University Jaunpur, also a State Government University. Currently, there are 438 colleges affiliated to Maharaja Suhel Dev State University Azamgarh, including 15 government aided non-government colleges, 4 government colleges and 419 self-financed colleges. These colleges run various undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs under the faculty of Agriculture, Art, Commerce, Education, Law and Science. Overall, the following undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs are run in the affiliated colleges: B.A., B.Ed., B.Sc., B.Sc.Ag., B.Com. and LL.B., and M.A., M.Ed.,M.Sc., M.Sc.Ag., M.Com. and LL.M.
Azamgarh is a culturally rich historical city, having headquarters of Azamgarh Commissionerate and the district, which is located about 260 km east of the state capital, Lucknow of Uttar Pradesh.
The city is well connected with three main surface Highways, Purvanchal Expressway between Lucknow and Ballia, 260 km) National Highway-24 between Gorakhpur (106 km) and Varanasi (95 km) route and the State Highway-34 between Azamgarh and Ballia (115 km). Politically, Azamgarh is surrounded by the boundaries of six districts, Mau in the East, Gorakhpur in the North, Jaunpur in the South-West, Ghazipur in the South-East, Ambedkar Nagar in the North-East and Sultanpur in the West. The nearest airportsare Varanasi (95 km) and Lucknow (260 km) to which a to- and fro- good number of flights are available from Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Chennai. The trains which pass through or bound to Azamgarh are Kaifiyaat Express,Ajmer Garib Nawaz Express, and Anand Vihar Terminal Express. The national airport has also been constructed at Azamgarh, where the flights operation is yet to start.Thus,Maharaja Suhel Dev State University, Azamgarh has an excellent approach through roads, trains and flights.
